Chapter Eleven

~ Luna-Beth ~

I woke the next morning curled in decaying leaves, with my nose pressed into the mellow spice of moss rooted to the soil, and a wolf balled tight behind my naked knees.

I lay on the ground, too content to move, and gazed upon the woods in my line of vision. Limbs, leaves, birds, and bark stood out crisply, as if a film had been peeled from my pupils. Shadows and layers were sharply defined, enriching the texture of the world in front of my eyes.

The forest’s scents erupted around me; everything smelled ripe, fresh—my nose picked up a flood of odors, though delineated like the currents in a pebble-strewn stream. Individually identifiable.

Sounds—pitches, tones, snaps, and rustlings—vibrated my eardrums in a melody of life stirring around me.

Amongst it all? The constant presence of the heat that enveloped me, and of the warmth that concentrated like the ball of the sun behind my knees and through my heart, my brown wolf.

My mate.

I’d wanted him the instant our eyes had met when he’d stood naked in an alder patch. I’d not just wanted him, either. From that moment on, I’d needed him, as if he were sustenance for the sleeping animal inside of me stirred from hibernation.

Christ. How true was that?

I was a wolf.

A gloriously furry, fanged, and four-footed wolf.

I sat bolt upright, accidentally booting Alec with my heel, and yipped. Then clamped my hand across my mouth from the shock of it. I had yipped like some tail-wagging puppy overjoyed, and overcome.

The brown wolf stretched himself to a straddling stance, and swished his tail like a banner behind him.

“Sorry.” I gushed, hiding my giant smile behind my palm.

Yet I wasn’t, and Alec advertised his pleasure in my new transformation with that waving tail. I marveled at him, my wolf-man who’d found me, as Fay had so accurately guessed, roaming around clueless.

Lucky for me. Danger aside, my life now was a far, magnificent cry from how it had started. I’d mated a wolf who adored me, whose very presence skyrocketed me to the moon, and rendered me deliciously squirming to straddle, to feel him move inside of me.

The brown wolf narrowed his eyes.

“What?” I quit imagining how Alec’s mouth, when he suckled my skin, burned like moist embers.

For an answer, the brown wolf sat on his haunches then unfolded into a six foot-four inch, sweating, muscular, and now that my senses had evolved into wolf, musky man. I smelled him from five feet away.

“Luna-Beth,” he growled, his throat still raspy from shifting.

My thighs tingled; I felt myself swell and dampen, and then dripped. Forget my memories. My core temperature ratcheted so high, my skin flushed. I could smell me.

So could Alec, who licked his lips, then shuddered all over, like his muscles itched. He crawled to me, dragged me into his arms with strength and need that blasted away trifling foreplay; I spread for him, whining with my own hunger.

His teeth pressed into the tendons of my neck and my
